Iodophor

Posted by: Phil23, Wednesday, August 18, 2010

I have read alot of "stuff" online concerning this sanitizer, and have found several different contact times for this to work. From just contact and dry......to 30 min soak time in a 12.5 ppm mix.
Im going to bottle my beer this weekend so would really like some input on the contact time for this product.

Cheers

Phil23:

30 minute soak is the time required for diversol (aka pink powder or whatever brand name).

Generally I've heard anywhere from 30 sec to 2 minute contact time for iodophor. I generally try to aim for 1 minute but I'm sure it's more like 30-45 seconds a lot of the time. Then I shake the residual iodophor off, and go for it.

Ya that pink stuff is the Santi brew I believe, I guess the same soak time as bleach, or close to it anyway. So using the bottle rinser with iodophor should be fine I presume, and let it air dry on the tree.

Well the pink stuff s a chlorinated cleaner so it makes sense that the time is similar to chlorine bleach.

For bottles, I use the bottle rinser loaded with iodophor, put the bottles on the draining tree, and ten get bottling. I don't wait for the bottles to dry. As I said above, I do give the bottles a little shake to get any residual iodophor out.

After getting the bottles done, I have to sanitize the sihoning rig, and that takes a couple of minutes, but I don't think that the bottles are dry.

I use about 1-2 minutes contact time. During primary fermentation stage, after sanitizing with iodophor I rinse equipment with boiling water so that it will not possibly disrupt fermentation. For racking and bottling, I do like Steve says and just shake off the residual. Never had a problem with lack of fermentation in the bottle with this method.

Gven that I used iodophor as my sanitizer when I ran a Ferment on Premises for 7 years, I'm pretty sure that it won't disrupt your fermentation.

I mix Iodophon concentrate to 25ppm, soak for ten min. and let air dry. If i'm pressed for time I'll rinse with tap water. As long as everthing is CLEAN to begin with, it will be fine.

No need to soak for 10 minutes with iodophor, no need to air dry, and no need to rinse. No problem if you choose to do it. If you had to do those things, I would have found something better to use.

BTW, do you really SOAK your carboys and primaries in 23+ litres of iodophor? Pretty costly, if you do.

I am currently running a bop. I use a couple of sanitizers for different reasons. Iodophor is used on the weekends when only a small amount is needed to sanitize a punch down tool so I can get out of the shop quicker. During the week I use peracidic acid.My thoughts were this when making this decision. While Iodophor is a great sanitizer it is coloured and Iodine based. Many of my customers commented on this when i did use it for mixing sanitizing. Many questioned the safety of the iodine so I researched an found a sanitizer that is stronger and clear. With the peracidic acid I have never had any one question it's safety and I have not had a problem with it. Spray on and one minute later the object is ready to use no rinsing. With the Iodophor I had people request me to rinse it off i believe it is due to the colour as it is quite noticeable when in solution. Just a few thoughts to add to the mix. A no rinse sanitizer is just that people that rinse the sanitizer off are taking the risk no matter how small of reinfecting the object they are trying to sanitize.
