Cru Select Italian Brunello

Posted by: RJ Spagnols, Monday, September 22, 2008

Big hearted and assertive, this deep ruby red wine is blessed with expressive aromas of tobacco, ripe plums and black cherries.  The palate offers explosive notes of blackberries, prunes and vanilla.  A wine sure to mature brilliantly.

Oh my gosh, is this tasty! I couldn't believe how good it was going into the bottle. Considering that Brunellos START at $40, I am very happy with this kit. Can't wait to see how it develops with age.

I moved my Brunello to the secondary tonight. The wine is so dark and smells wonderful.

I don't know how I am going to wait 18 months to drink it!

Ok so they showed up after I posted thats good, but it would have been nicer if I new the previous comments before I posted.
Sorry for testing the comments section here , but ti wasn't working before I posted.
While we are reviewing I suggest the Rosso Grande , either the Cellar Classic winery series or
just the Cellar classic. There I made it kinda related , unfortunately not to this wine type.

Well maybee we can test the moderators as well . Fell free to delete , move or otherwise dismember any or all of these two posts.

Thanks to Rodney and DoctorCAD’s comments I’ve just purchased this wine. Being relatively new to winemaking (8 months of experience) and having many young wines in my cellar, I’m looking for great quality wines that can be enjoyed young; for a new winemaker has few choices at his disposal. Being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor shortly after bottling keeps the new winemaker interested and patient for the long haul. For patience is much easier with a nice glass of wine.

Please post more comments for other Cru Select and En Primeur wines you may have enjoyed young.

Got 30 bottles plus 2 glasses.

Added 3 crushed campden tabs and poured into the Brunello an hour before bottling. Put 30 One-Step cleaned bottles into the new dishwasher and used the "Sanitize" setting. The bottles were way too hot to touch after that! I let them cool off and sterlilzed with sulfite solution right before filling. The wife did the filling and I sterilized the next 5 bottles and the next 5 corks. It took about an hour to finish, including washing the filled bottles afterwards to get all of the stickey stuff off. They are sitting in the bathtub for a day or two so there isn't any cork-popping worries, but the wine was dead flat, so I'm not worried.

The bottom half-inch was racked into a half-gallon bottle and I let it settle until this afternoon, when I poured 2 glasses out of it. It is young, still has a bit of a bite, but really good. Heavy red wine with strong oak and berry flavor. Not quite a Brunello, but close to a Rosso. I'll give it 6 months for the first bottle to be opened and make another taste test. 18 months will make this close to a $50 bottle, I'm guessing...its that good.

Now, where is that time machine...

Now that mine has sat for close to 2 years, I have opened a few bottles.

Fan-Frickin-Tastic!

Great noes. Lots of flavor, nice and mellow, may be a bit too much oak for my tastes, but others do like that in an Italian wine.

Strongly recommended (IF YOU KNOW WHAT A BRUNELLO IS)

My supplier store personnel convinced me to bottle 4 to 6 half bottles for each kit at bottling time. I mark each half bottle (375ml) with date of bottling; type of wine; and kit type on masking tape. Saves formal labels, I open one of these every 4 to 6 months to test progress of wine. That way, if it is not as good as I want, do not lose a full bottle. this size bottle is also great for Christmas gifts. I admit, I am selfish and do not want to give away my wine.
